Kuna Indian Vintage Hand Stitch Special Background Mola Art-Panama 16051623L

This mola measures about 15.5" x 10".

This mola was bought in the 1950's or 1960's by a very good friend. She lived in Panama during this period and became a local expert on mola. Dottie bought thousands of molas and learned a great deal about the Kuna mola artists. She's quite a seamstress/artist herself so she shared her knowledge with the artists as she was learning their tricks.

Today she and her husband are retired and from time to time I have been able to talk her out of some of her treasures. This is one of those molas. Back in the good ole days the artists delighted in using background materials that added to the design and color of their molas. Look closely and you will see what I mean.
