Wounaan Embera Special Iguana Tagua Carving-Panama 16032919L

This is an unusual tagua carving. Usually the entire carving is dipped in a cocobolo wood chip dye. Then the base was whittled away to leave a white base and dyed iguana. Here the entire tagua carving was dyed and left as is. This technique was popular in the late the 1990's.

I suppose this fellow has been in our inventory for 20 years or more. And look at the condition...these carvings will be here after I am gone. No wonder tagua is called vegetable ivory.
