Wounaan Turtle Tagua Pendant Carving Panama

This is an extremely well detailed tagua turtle carved pendant. Levi Chacarama is the artist. He must have carved a bag full of these little devils for me while he was going to Medical Technical school. I feel like I paid his tuition but it was worth it. He’s a lab tech now and I’m still young enough to sell the rest of the bag of turtle pendants. If I get too old I’ll turn them into earrings so I can unload them two at a time.

SUSTAINABLE SOURCED MATERIALS: Panamanian Tagua Jewelry are handcrafted from the Tagua Nut a seed of certain palm trees which grows from southern Panama, along the Andes to Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, northwestern Brazil, and Peru. Some of the natural dyes used include Trumpet Vine, Safran, Lianas Vine, Mud, and Cocobolo Wood all locally harvested from the Rainforest.

TRADITIONAL DESIGN: The Tagua Carving designs usually portray wildlife in the Rainforest. Including Hummingbirds, Tree Frogs, Toucans, Monkeys, Parrots, Jaguars, Turtles, and various other animals who call the rainforest home. They consider their carvings an artistic expression, incorporating their dreams, feelings, and aspirations into their carvings. Using traditional carving techniques commonly known as Chip Carving or Whittling.

RAINFOREST & WILDLIFE CONSERVATION: One Tagua palm tree produces enough vegetable ivory to equal that of a female elephant trunk every year. By choosing Tagua you are helping fight the illegal Ivory trade and protecting endangered species. Tagua nuts are non-toxic, eco-friendly, and renewable. The nuts are harvested by hand ensuring the trees are not harmed protecting and conserving the rainforest.
